The festive period is a special time for many families across Bradford District and Craven. But with colder weather and more time spent indoors, it also brings an increased risk of winter illnesses.

Flu, COVID-19, norovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are circulating widely and placing additional pressure on our local NHS services. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to stay well this winter.

Get protected with winter vaccinations

If you’re eligible, please make sure you get your flu, COVID-19 or RSV vaccine. These vaccines can significantly reduce the chances of becoming seriously unwell. Ahead of the Christmas period, you can book your COVID-19 and flu vaccines through:

Many local pharmacies and walk-in NHS vaccination sites are also offering the flu and COVID-19 vaccine. You can find these on the NHS West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership website.

Choose the right NHS service

To help reduce pressure on busy A&E departments and ambulance services over Christmas, please use the most appropriate NHS service if you feel unwell as a first port of call. For non-emergencies, you can:

  • Visit 111.nhs.uk
  • Call the NHS 111 advice line
  • Speak to your GP or local pharmacist

Pharmacists can provide expert advice for common illnesses such as coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections and general aches and pains. They can also give advice about medicines, including how to use your medicine, discussing side effects or answering any other questions you have.

Check your medicines ahead of the holidays

If you take repeat prescriptions, make sure you order and collect them in advance. Many pharmacies have reduced opening hours over the Christmas and New Year period. Checking your medication now means you’ll have what you need throughout the long weekends.

You can find an open pharmacy near you by visiting www.nhs.uk/find-a-pharmacy.

Dr Sohail Abbas, Bradford GP and Director of Population Health and Inequalities at Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership, said: “Our local NHS teams are working incredibly hard at what is always a very busy time of year. We’re asking everyone to take a moment to think about their health and do what they can to stay well this festive season, so hospitals can focus on the people who need them most.

“By using services such as NHS 111 online, keeping active, getting your COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, and keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home, you can stay happy and healthy throughout the holidays. More tips and advice are available on www.togetherwe-can.com/.

“While NHS services are under pressure this winter season, it’s vital that anyone experiencing a life-threatening emergency continues to seek help immediately by calling 999 or visiting A&E.”

Mental health support

If you need emotional support over Christmas, you can visit Healthy Minds for confidential support and information to help mental health. If you or someone you know is in mental health crisis, First Response is available 24/7 on 0800 952 1181.

For more information on when to call 999 and when to go to A&E, you can visit the NHS UK website.
