Five years ago, the Healthy Minds Apprentices embarked on a mission to create safer, more accepting spaces for children and young people in our community. What began as a small initiative has since grown into the impactful Kindness, Compassion, and Understanding (KCU) Anti-Bullying Campaign, which is now reaching thousands, making a difference in the lives of pupils across the Bradford district.
Since its launch in February 2020, the KCU Anti-Bullying Campaign has been delivered to 66 schools, won two community awards, and positively impacted the lives of 19,039 pupils across the Bradford District. What started as a simple idea has blossomed into a powerful movement, empowering young people to make more conscious and positive life choices.
The impact of KCU
KCU is designed to reduce bullying and discrimination, encouraging the creation of more inclusive and supportive school and community environments. Through engaging classroom workshops, heartfelt discussions, and interactive activities, KCU creates empathy, patience, and respect among children and young people. The campaign’s goal is to show students how their words can affect others, how compassion can be put into action, and how embracing differences leads to stronger communities.
Students, from a primary school in BD8, have shared their reflections on how KCU has shaped their views:
“Your words can affect someone’s mental health, don’t be the reason people don’t want to come to school.”
“I have learned to be kind to others, no matter what mood you are in.”
These powerful messages are just the beginning. With recent expansion into secondary schools, post-16 education, and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provisions, the reach of KCU continues to grow. We are committed to ensuring that all young people have kindness at the core of their values, regardless of their background or needs.
Why KCU works: teacher and student feedback
Teachers have praised the campaign for its ability to adapt to a wide range of abilities, ensuring that every student can engage with the material meaningfully. One teacher from a Special Educational Needs school shared:
“The presentation and workshop matched the range of abilities in my class well and they delivered a variety of engaging activities.”
“The presentation linked back to the curriculum reiterating messages and allowed students to join discussions.”
The success of the KCU campaign is driven by the passionate and dedicated Healthy Minds Apprentices. These young leaders are the heart and soul of the campaign, carefully planning, developing, creating, and delivering each workshop with a firm belief in the power of kindness. With every session, they inspire students to make positive, lasting changes in how they treat others.
A Healthy Minds Apprentice from Cohort 5 shared their personal take on the impact of KCU:
“KCU is an extremely important workshop, it helps to educate the young people of Bradford, embedding concepts such as the protective characteristics. It acts as a form of early intervention to reduce bullying within schools, preventing poor mental health. Each and every class takes something new with them from the workshop – this is what it’s all about. I truly believe that the message behind each segment of the presentation is vital and that small reminders can positively change their choices.”
