Last week the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a ‘woman’ is based on biological sex. Trans women are protected against discrimination under the Equality Act, this ruling doesn’t change that.
We know that people will have their own views on the issue of gender identity, but we also know that in Bradford District and Craven we are a place that is welcoming and accepting of all.
This means having respect for the differences – including differences of views – that make us part of communities at work and at home. It is ok for us to have different opinions on matters but what we cannot allow for is when those differences lead to division, intolerance and harassment and abuse.
As a partnership, we want to remind people that we will not accept abusive or discriminatory comments or behaviours that go against our shared values based on our place proudly being a place of sanctuary. A place that has regularly shown others how it responds to unacceptable behaviours and comes together in a shared display of humanity.
We are an inclusive partnership where we act as allies and advocates for all. We call upon all of you, across our collective health and care workforce, to stand up against any abusive behaviour towards the trans community.
No one should experience hate based on who they are, what they believe in and the gender they identify with. If you are a victim of any form of hate crime, it is important that you report this as soon as you can and when it is safe for you to do so. If you experience, witness or have been involved in a hate crime you can report it through West Yorkshire Police. If you experience, witness or have been involved in a hate crime you can also report it through Bradford Hate Crime Alliance.
If you have experienced or witnessed something you believe is an Online Hate Crime or Online Hate Speech, there are some simple steps you can take and people you can talk to. Stop Hate Crime has developed guidance to help you report any online content that encourages or is directly leading to hate crime.
Reporting makes a difference – to you, your friends, and your life. If you see a crime that is in progress or if someone is in immediate danger, please call 999 without hesitation.
We will await further guidance from national bodies who will be considering all relevant legislation and the Supreme Court ruling. But we don’t need legislation to do the right thing. We must continue to maintain our focus on ensuring we support all our colleagues, citizens and communities.
