Bradford residents are urging people not to ignore NHS screening invitations — with locals saying the quick checks gave them peace of mind and, in some cases, lifesaving early diagnoses.
Cervical, breast, bowel and lung cancer screening is offered free by the NHS, yet too many people miss their appointment or put it off. Now, people across the city are coming together to share their own experiences to encourage others to go.
“Quick, easy, and nothing to worry about”
Irene, from BD1, admits she was anxious before her cervical screening but is glad she went: “I was nervous, but it was quick, easy, and nothing to worry about.”
“Very treatable thanks to early detection”
Sarah, from BD16, says her breast screening was crucial: “I had no idea at all, and to find out so early meant it was going to be very treatable.”
“It’s peace of mind”
Micheal, from BD19, wants more people to use the simple bowel screening kit that arrives in the post every two years: “If this test comes through the post, get it done. Get it sent back. It’s peace of mind.”
“It was all so simple”
Derek, from Bradford, found his lung health check straightforward: “The scan was over in just five minutes. The staff were friendly and made me feel at ease. Don’t be worried — it’s as simple as that.”
Cervical screening is offered to people with a cervix aged 25–64. Breast screening is offered every three years to women aged 50–70. Bowel screening kits are sent every two years to people aged 50–74, and lung health checks are offered to those aged 55–74 with a history of smoking.
Screening can detect problems long before symptoms appear, giving people the best chance of successful treatment.
Don’t delay — book, post, or pick up the phone
Invitations are sent out by post or text. Some screenings take less than ten minutes at a clinic, others can be done at home. All could save your life.
Local residents are clear: don’t put it off: “It’s better if it’s found early — that way, you can take action and do something about it.”
